Following patient feedback, we have put on 2 events in the past few months. The first one focused on helping patients to take control of their healthcare by using the NHS App. Feedback was very positive and we are planning to run monthly sessions to help any patient use the NHS App and/or complete the on-line triage form from Tuesday 12th November from 10 am to 12 noon at Buckden Surgery. This will also be an opportunity for patients to provide feedback on using the surgeries at both Buckden and Little Paxton. Further details on Facebook and at both surgeries.
The second event was a Q & A session for new parents on common conditions in children. Dr Newark, GP was put in the hot sit together with Ingrid Wilson, Health Visitor from the 0 – 19 Health Child Programme. A range of conditions were raised and a summary of the key advice was as follows:
· Constipation – One of the biggest issues affecting 1 in 3 children and can have wider implications on the child’s health and well being. Your child may be passing regular motions but still be constipated (look out for wide/large stool which is likely constipation driven) Best source of advice and further information https://eric.org.uk/childrens-bowels/constipation-in-children/
· High temperatures – nurofen first as this brings down the temperature quicker and calpol 2 hours later.
· Coughing at night – Try and identify the cause. Cough medicines are generally not helpful. Simple remedies to help include calpol plug ins, nasal spray, tilting the cot mattress. As a general rule, if symptoms persist more than 3 weeks, seek medical advice.
· Intolerances – Cows milk protein intolerance/allergy is very common in infants. Treatment includes cutting out dairy and soya from diet, alternative formula options are available on prescription. Children can be referred to the dietitian for further guidance and help with milk/soya ladders.
· Tummy bugs – Main aim here is to keep your child hydrated so keep an eye on wet nappies. Ways to encourage drinking include using a calpol syringe, ice lollies and squash. If concerned seek further advice.
Our thanks to Dr Newark and Ingrid Wilson for taking time out to support this event.
Future diary date: Christmas Coffee Morning, Friday 13th December 2024 – 10.30 am – 12 noon at Buckden Methodist Church Hall, Buckden. Come and join us for a cuppa and a chat. We would like to hear your views about using the surgeries at both Buckden and Little Paxton. We’re also available to help you use the NHS App to take control of your healthcare and/or to complete the on-line triage form.
